## What should we expect in Grade 5 & 6 Patterning?

__Grade 5__* understand growing, shrinking and repeating patterns

* make tables that show numbers getting larger or smaller using subtraction, addition, multiplication, division

* Make predictions about patterns using shapes

* find the missing numbers in equations ( 8 X ..... = 88)

* understand that letters can mean a variable ( c + 5 = 9)

* read, understand and create T tables with patterns

__Grade 6__* describe and represent relationships in patterns that have growing and shrinking patterns

* looking for one and two step patterns in numbers ( Start at 3 then double the number and add 1)

* use multiplying / division to create patterns in numbers

* determine term numbers in patterns

(for the pattern 100, 400, 500, 800, 9000, 1 200... What is the 15th term?)

* solve problems that involve 2 or 3 unknown letters to represent numbers

(If n + 1 = 15 and n+1+s = 19, What value does S represent?)

* read, understand and create T tables
